I moved here and spent the first month on the beach side of the road, which is what everyone does. Everything I actually like is on the other side.
Up the canyons there are farm stands, fig ranches, roads with no one on them and houses cut into the hill. The beach is still there in the evening.
The right turn
Farm stands, a fig ranch, and roads that empty out within five minutes of leaving the highway. It is fifteen minutes from the water and it does not feel like the same county.
The sunset walk
Everyone does it and it is still worth doing. The beach empties of day visitors around five and for the next hour it is mostly people who live here, walking in the same direction.
Flowers, constantly
The single cheapest thing that makes a house feel finished. There is a stand on the way home and I stop at it more often than is defensible.
