The boat left at nine and the man driving it did not say where we were going, because there was nowhere to go — a sandbank appears at low tide about twenty minutes out and disappears again by four.
We had it entirely to ourselves for four hours. I have thought about it roughly once a week ever since.
The local island
Maalhos has a few hundred people on it, a handful of guesthouses, one shop that is also someone’s front room, and the same water the resorts are built on.
There is a rule you should know: local islands are inhabited, so you cover up on the village beaches and swim at the designated bikini beach. It takes ten minutes to understand and nobody is anything but kind about it.
What it cost
The guesthouse was about seventy dollars a night with breakfast. The boat to the sandbank, arranged the evening before, was thirty for the two of us for the day.
The resort visible across the water starts at around twelve hundred a night. The sandbank does not know the difference.
What I would do differently
Stay longer. Four nights was not enough and the ferry schedule makes short trips harder than they need to be — the public ferry runs a few days a week and the speedboat is several times the price.
Bring more sunscreen than you think. There is one shop and it does not sell it.
